The Journey

Some journeys are about seeing a place. This one is about being changed by it. This eight-day pilgrimage follows a quiet, historic line south through France — beginning in the grandeur of Paris, easing through the medieval towns and river valleys of the countryside, and arriving, finally, at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, where a poor fourteen-year-old shepherd girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary eighteen times in 1858. Along the way, there is room to simply be in France, too — a Seine cruise, a morning at the Louvre, a Cahors wine tasting — because a pilgrimage renews the spirit best when it isn't rushed. This is a journey I know firsthand. I've visited Lourdes twice, as well as Rome, Assisi, and stops along the Camino de Santiago in France — and I've built this itinerary from that experience.

Day 1 — Arrival in Paris

A private transfer from the airport to your hotel, perfectly positioned in the heart of the city. Settle in, rest after the journey, and let Paris begin to reveal itself. This evening is unstructured — a first quiet dinner to ease into the week ahead.

Day 2 — Sacred Paris

Paris holds some of the most significant churches in Christendom, and today is devoted to them. Notre-Dame Cathedral, the 850-year-old heart of the city, magnificently restored after the 2019 fire and more luminous now than in generations — its rose windows alone are worth the morning. From there, the rue du Bac and the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal, where in 1830 the Virgin Mary appeared to a young novice, Catherine Labouré, and asked that a medal be struck — the same medal worn by millions of Catholics today. Nearby, Saint-Sulpice, the second-largest church in Paris, home to a Delacroix mural and a centuries-old astronomical gnomon set into its floor. In the afternoon, Sainte-Chapelle, the jewel-box royal chapel built by Louis IX to house the Crown of Thorns, its walls composed almost entirely of 13th-century stained glass. This evening, an unhurried dinner cruise along the Seine — the illuminated bridges and monuments of Paris passing quietly by, a gentle close to a day of devotion.

Day 3 — The Louvre & Free Time in Paris

A morning at the Louvre — not the frantic version most visitors experience, but a considered visit to the works that matter most: the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Venus de Milo, and the Mona Lisa herself, seen with context rather than chaos. The afternoon is yours — wander the Tuileries, browse a market on the Left Bank, or simply sit at a café and watch Paris go by. A good day to slow down before the journey south begins.

Day 4 — Orléans, Nevers & the Story of Bernadette

This morning, depart Paris and travel to Orléans, the city Joan of Arc famously liberated from siege in 1429 — a brief but resonant stop, standing where the Maid of Orléans changed the course of French history. Continue on through the Loire Valley to Nevers, a quiet river town that holds one of the most extraordinary sights in French Catholicism: the Saint Gildard Convent, where Bernadette Soubirous lived out her final years as a nun, and where her body has remained, remarkably incorrupt, in a glass reliquary for well over a century. This evening, a walk through Nevers's old town and dinner along the Loire.

Day 5 — Cahors, on the Way of Saint James

A scenic drive south through the French countryside brings you to Cahors, a medieval town wrapped in a horseshoe bend of the Lot River. For centuries, Cahors has been a resting point for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago — the Way of Saint James — and its Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, with its unusual twin domes, holds a treasured relic: the Sainte Coiffe, believed to be the cloth that covered Christ's head in the tomb. Just beside it stands the Pont Valentré, a striking 14th-century fortified bridge that has carried pilgrims across the Lot since the Middle Ages — both sites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. This evening, a walk across the bridge as the light softens, followed by a Cahors wine tasting — the region's dark, tannic malbec has been grown on these hillsides since Roman times.

Day 6 — Cahors to Lourdes

This morning, continue south toward the Pyrenees, arriving in Lourdes by early evening. This evening, your first visit to the Grotto of Massabielle itself, where Our Lady first appeared, followed by the candlelight rosary procession, held nightly at 9 PM — a tradition unbroken since the apparitions themselves.

Day 7 — In the Footsteps of Bernadette & the Sanctuary

A full day given to Lourdes itself, following the daily rhythm of the Sanctuary: Mass at 9:30 AM in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the upper basilica built directly above the Grotto; the Baths, open from 9 to 11 AM for those who wish to take part in the Water of Lourdes (in past years this meant a full immersion assisted by volunteers, though the exact format may vary by visit — we'll confirm current details ahead of your stay); and at 2 PM, the guided walking tour In the Footsteps of Bernadette, departing from the statue of the Crowned Mary at the Sanctuary's Information Center — a walk through her humble birthplace, the Boly Mill, and the Cachot, the single damp room where her impoverished family once lived, putting the whole story of Lourdes into human perspective. At 3 PM, the Rosary is prayed at the Grotto, and at 5 PM, the Eucharistic procession moves through the Sanctuary grounds. The Grotto itself remains open throughout for quiet, personal prayer whenever it's wanted.

Day 8 — Departure

A final morning at leisure before a private transfer to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport for your journey home.
