The Cote d'Azur is gorgeous, warm, and very much open for American visitors. Whatever you may have read about European travel right now - I was just there, and it was as magical as ever. The people, the pace, the light on the water. There is simply nothing like it.

Cannes
We stayed at the legendary Hotel Le Majestic right on La Croisette and toured the newly renovated Carlton - both extraordinary five-star properties. The Carlton's renovation manages to feel fresh and modern while keeping all the old glamour intact.
The dining was memorable at every turn. One evening we had dinner at Da Bouttau - the oldest restaurant in Cannes, rustic and intimate, the kind of place that feels like it belongs to another, slower era. Another night we were treated to Il Grande at the Palm Beach casino, with sweeping views over the Mediterranean that were simply stunning. Two completely different experiences, both unforgettable - and both very much the essence of Cannes.

Mougins
We drove to the hilltop village of Mougins in vintage convertibles-tops down, the Mediterranean sparkling below, under a perfectly blue Riviera sky. Mougins is the kind of village that stops you in your tracks. Wandering its narrow cobblestone streets, I came across an artist in his small studio and left with an original oil painting of the lavender fields. The best souvenirs are never planned.

Grasse and Fragonard
The highlight for me was a perfume creation workshop at Fragonard - one of the great historic perfume houses of France. It was genuinely fascinating, learning how a master perfumer builds a scent from scratch. And in Grasse - the perfume capital of the world, just above Cannes - during growing season you can do this workshop surrounded by actual lavender, rose, and jasmine fields, with a private tour led by the gardeners who tend the blooms. It is extraordinary and not something you find on your own. This is exactly the kind of experience I can arrange for my clients.

Nice
My last day ended perfectly at Nice's famous Cours Saleya - one of the great open air markets of France. Flowers, paintings, fragrant spices, and scented soaps fill the stalls, and vendors bake socca fresh right in front of you. Socca is a beloved Nicoise specialty - a thin crispy flatbread made from chickpea flour that has been a staple of Nice street food for generations. On Mondays the market transforms into an antique fair, well worth planning around if you can.

And just beyond the market, Old Nice spills over with outdoor restaurants where you can linger for hours. The beach restaurants along the Promenade are another world entirely - casual, sun-drenched, and completely irresistible. It is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay forever.

Beyond the Cities
What people don't always realize is how easy the Cote d'Azur is to explore. From a base in Cannes or Nice, you are just a short drive from some of the most beautiful places in the world. Eze, perched dramatically above the sea. Monaco, glamorous and compact. Saint-Tropez, as chic as ever. Menton, quiet and luminous on the Italian border. Each one completely different, all of them unforgettable.

And this July, Juan-les-Pins hosts the legendary Jazz a Juan festival - one of the great outdoor music events in Europe, right on the waterfront under the pine trees. Tickets can be arranged - ask me. It is the kind of trip where every day feels like a discovery and nothing feels rushed.

Ready to Plan Your Trip?
If France - and specifically the Cote d'Azur- has been on your mind, let's talk. Summer availability is filling up and I would love to help you put something together that goes well beyond the guidebook.

  Plan Your France Trip

France 2026: The Year of Monet, A Once-in-a-Lifetime Celebration

https://www.equinoxtravelus.com/travel-blog/france-2026-the-year-of-monet-a-once-in-a-lifetime-celebration

https://www.equinoxtravelus.com/travel-blog/france-2026-the-year-of-monet-a-once-in-a-lifetime-celebration#comments

Uncategorized

There are years when France is simply France, breathtaking, romantic, endlessly compelling. And then there are years when France becomes something even more extraordinary. 2026 is one of those years.

This year marks the centenary of the death of Claude Monet, the master of Impressionism, who passed away on December 5, 1926, in his beloved village of Giverny. To honor his legacy, France has organized over 100 events spanning Normandy and the Paris Region, including exhibitions, river cruises, open-air concerts, lectures, garden walks, and immersive experiences that bring Monet's world to life in ways never seen before.

I have walked the gardens at Giverny. I have stood in the oval rooms of the Musée de l'Orangerie, surrounded by the Water Lilies. There is nothing quite like experiencing Monet's world firsthand, and in 2026, that experience has been elevated to something truly exceptional.

WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHERE
Giverny: Before the Water Lilies
March 27 to July 5, 2026

The Musee des Impressionnismes Giverny opens the centenary season with a remarkable exhibition devoted to Monet's earliest years in the village, the period from 1883 to 1890, before the famous water garden existed. Around thirty works are being brought back to the very sites where they were created, allowing visitors to see Giverny's meadows, poplars, and riverbanks through Monet's eyes, both inside the gallery and beyond it. It is a rare and deeply moving experience, art and landscape in direct conversation.

Normandy Impressionist Festival
May 29 to September 27, 2026

The 2026 edition of this beloved festival is dedicated entirely to Monet's garden, the living masterpiece he created alongside his paintings. Across Normandy, over 60 contemporary artistic projects spanning visual arts, music, film, and dance celebrate Monet's enduring influence, with international artists from Japan, China, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and beyond joining the festivities. Giverny, Vernon, Rouen, Honfleur, Le Havre, and the banks of the Seine are all part of the celebration.

Le Havre: Monet in Le Havre
June 15 to September 27, 2026

The MuMa in Le Havre presents a major summer exhibition tracing Monet's deep connection to this port city, from his childhood through to 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris. This is where it all began.

Paris: Monet and Time at the Musee de l'Orangerie
September 30, 2026 to March 2027

For those who, like me, hold the Orangerie in a special place in their hearts, this exhibition is unmissable. Examining Monet's relationship with time, from the Rouen Cathedral series to the monumental Water Lilies, it is a profound meditation on one of art history's greatest obsessions. The Orangerie is always a pilgrimage. In 2026, it becomes even more so.

A Tribute at Monet's Grave
December 5, 2026

On the centenary of Monet's death, the Musee des Impressionnismes will hold a tribute at his grave in Giverny, a quiet, deeply personal moment to mark the passing of a giant.

BEYOND THE EXHIBITIONS

The centenary is also an invitation to step inside the painting itself. Visitors can explore the cliffs of Etretat that Monet painted obsessively, stand before Rouen Cathedral as he did in all seasons and all lights, wander the ports of Honfleur and Le Havre, and of course walk the garden at Giverny, the living canvas he tended as carefully as any painting.

The houses where Monet lived in Argenteuil, Vetheuil, and Giverny offer a rare glimpse into the private life of a man who made beauty his life's work.

WHY THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT

Monet's centenary is not simply a cultural calendar event. It is a convergence of art, landscape, history, and emotion that will not happen again in our lifetimes. France is pulling out every stop to make 2026 the definitive year to experience Monet's world. Whether you are a lifelong devotee of Impressionism or someone who has simply always felt drawn to France without quite knowing why, this is the year to go. Ready to experience Monet's France for yourself? I specialize in crafting deeply personal European journeys, the kind that go beyond the highlights and bring you into the heart of a place. Let's start planning your 2026 trip to France.

Merry Christmas!
